This is what Clara Schumann wrote in 1857 to Johannes Brahms after reviewing the scores of the newly composed "German Requiem." She sensed the magic emanating from this tense music of the then 30-year-old. For his work, Brahms did not choose the Latin form of the Catholic Missa da Requiem, but a selection of biblical texts he created himself, which offer comfort in times of loss and heavy sorrow. In his music, he emphasizes hope for "redemption" and "eternal joy" after death for all people.
