When harp meets guitar, two architects of new chamber jazz are at work: First, there is Anton Mangold, a harpist and saxophonist in rare combination and a boundary-crosser between the ethereal sounds of the harp and the expressive dynamics of his saxophone playing. Then there is Christian Bekmulin, his counterpart, who weaves this sound into an atmospheric dense Gesamtkunstwerk with subtle guitar work and melodic clarity. Together, they create arrangements that impress with technical mastery and deeply felt emotionality. Poetic, dreamlike, and intimate is the music that breathes and puts the audience into a state of alert calm. Sometimes gently flowing and impressionistic, then again rhythmically pointed and permeated by contemporary jazz, their playing is a plea for the 'beautiful' in jazz – without sacrificing depth or modernity.
