Sebastian Castellio (1515–1563) is one of the most impressive pioneers of freedom of conscience and religious tolerance in the 16th century. In reformist Basel, which became his spiritual home and refuge, he raised his voice against dogmatism and intellectual paternalism. With great determination, he defended the individual's freedom to think, judge, and follow his conscience – a legacy of remarkable relevance. The event series "Freedom of Thought. Castellio in Basel" commemorates this important Basel humanist and also questions the relevance of his ideas: What does intellectual freedom mean in a time when certainties are once again being scrutinized? Welcome speech: 1st Vice President of the National Council Katja Christ / Laudations: Dr. Noah Regenass / Music: ReRenaissance / Reception. Three significant new publications will be presented:

• The "Castellio Reading Book" with a foreword by Bernhard Vischer and contributions from internationally renowned Castellio researchers: Dr. Christine Christ-von Wedel, Dr. Matthias Dall‘Asta, Dr. Peter Litwan, Prof. Dr. Barbara Mahlmann-Bauer, Dr. Mikkel Mangold, Dr. Uwe Plath, Dr. Stefania Salvadori, Prof. Dr. Ueli Zahnd.
• The monograph "Sebastian Castellio between Middle Ages, Reformation, and Humanism. An account of his tolerance ideas in dialogue with figures of Basel Minster" by Dr. Christine Christ-von Wedel.
• Reconstruction of the Latin original text with German translation of "De haereticis non puniendis – Heretics must not be punished" by Dr. Uwe Plath (Castellio Award winner 2026). The event takes place at the University of Basel and honors the legacy of Sebastian Castellio, an important advocate of freedom of conscience. In addition to the presentation of new books, the award ceremony of the creative competition will also be held.
