Musical Vespers – Martin Schmid SJ (1694–1772)

Description

As part of the Universal Mission Month, Missio Switzerland invites you to exceptional musical vespers at the Church of the Cordoliers in Fribourg. The program features works by the Jesuit missionary, Swiss musician and architect P. Martin Schmid SJ (1694-1772). In the 18th century, Martin Schmid carried out his missionary work among the Chiquitos, in what is now Bolivia. His compositions are rooted in the European Baroque tradition while demonstrating an extraordinary encounter between different cultures. These polyphonic works will be performed by soloists Joëlle Delley Zhao, Benoit Volkart, Bo Zhao, and Fabrice Hayoz. They will be accompanied by the musicians of the Baroque Ensemble of Léman and Philippe Despond on the organ. The musical direction is led by the Fribourg musician Thierry Dagon. The audience will also participate in the musical event: they are invited to sing in unison on simple Gregorian interludes. A playful vocal warm-up will take place at the beginning of the celebration.
