Description

Set in 1949, Vaterland follows Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika as they travel through the devastated landscape of Germany in a black Buick, returning from exile. The film explores their emotional journey, including moments of grief upon hearing about Klaus Mann's suicide, and highlights Mann's visit to Weimar where he receives the Goethe Prize and prepares to deliver a speech for the poet's 200th birthday.
