CINEMA | DRAMA In the summer of 1949, Thomas Mann, living in exile in the US, returns to his destroyed homeland for the first time after World War II. He is accompanied by his strong-willed daughter Erika Mann. The journey takes them from the American-controlled Frankfurt am Main across the zone border to Weimar, administered by the Soviets. At both locations, Mann is to receive the Goethe Prize and give speeches. While the two systems try to instrumentalize the famous author for their political purposes, the journey is overshadowed by a serious family tragedy.
