An evening with three masterpieces. Featuring works by Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen, and Marco Goecke, this evening combines three of the most significant manuscripts in dance history and showcases a diverse range of choreographic styles set to an eclectic music mix from Baroque to Blues. Part 1 – ‹Bella Figura› by Jiří Kylián Jiří Kylián is one of the legendary figures of the international dance scene. Over three decades, he shaped the artistic profile of Nederlands Dans Theater, which under his leadership has developed into one of the world's leading contemporary ballet companies. What unites Kylián's choreography is its painful beauty and a lightness of movement, accompanied by deep musicality, expressive emotionality, and heartfelt inwardness. In ‹Bella Figura› (1995), Kylián explores fascinating time and thought circles, once again engaging with fundamental questions of human existence and seeking to transcend the rigid boundaries between dream and reality, appearance and being. Set to a mixture of old and new music – Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Lucas Foss – the work, now part of the global repertoire, features breathtaking duets, trios, and quartets. Part 2 – ‹The Old Man and Me› by Hans van Manen Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen connects two very different pieces of music through a sensual, elegant, and humorous duet: the titular melancholic blues song by JJ Cale and Stravinsky's exuberant ‹Circus Polka›. In 1996, he created the opening to one of his most touching dances in his long list of masterpieces. With a wink, the recently deceased master of contemporary ballet reflects on aging in ‹The Old Man and Me›, also allowing for a heartfelt revisit of shared memories. Part 3 – ‹Le Spectre de la Rose› by Marco Goecke Marco Goecke's masterpiece ‹Le Spectre de la Rose›, created in 2009 for the 100th anniversary of the Ballets Russes for Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, will be seen in Basel as a Swiss premiere. Already with its world premiere in 1911, Mikhail Fokine's work became a classic whose fascination endures to this day. Goecke approaches the iconic Pas de deux as an extension. The poetic dream of a girl seduced into dance by the spirit of a rose is narrated. Goecke's interpretation creates a mysterious world full of love longing set to the composition ‹Aufforderung zum Tanz› by Carl Maria von Weber.
