The Artifacts Trio combines the flute player Nicole Mitchell, cellist Tomeka Reid, and drummer Mike Reed, three outstanding personalities of the Chicago jazz scene. Internationally acclaimed and awarded prestigious prizes, the three connect traditional sounds with modern aesthetics and innovation in their energetic interplay. Tomeka Reid, who has revitalized her instrument in jazz and was among other honors awarded the Doris Duke Award in 2026, has repeatedly excited audiences at the unerhört!-Festival: in 2019 solo and in various formations, including 2023 with Myra Melford's Fire and Water and last year with the Craig Taborn Trio. For years, we have also been striving to bring the exceptional flutist Nicole Mitchell onto an unerhört!-stage. DownBeat magazine and the Jazz Journalists Association have repeatedly named her "Flutist of the Year." She was the first president of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in Chicago. Since its founding in 1965, it has played a pioneering role in promoting African American music and culture. Mike Reed, a central figure in Chicago's diverse art scene, completes the Artifacts Trio, about which jazz journalist John Sharpe raves: "Full of irresistible beats, attractive tunes, savvy arrangements and top notch playing, the Artifacts Trio shows that artistry and fun can high five without compromise." Nicole Mitchell describes the trio as "a band that’s fun – because we’ve been close friends for many years. I don’t think we can separate our friendship from the music.
