Description

Woyzeck based on the same-named drama fragment by Georg Büchner is a musical theater piece featuring UMS’nJIP (Ulrike Mayer-Spohn and Javier Hagen), directed by Wolfgang Beuschel. The script for UMS’nJIP’s Woyzeck is based on the shortened and dramaturgically condensed original by Büchner. Woyzeck, a simple soldier, serves as a barber to a captain. He cannot support his beloved Marie and their child with his wages, so he also works as a medical test subject. The effects of the experiments weaken him so much that he increasingly loses himself in a world of delusions. And so, Woyzeck – despite his sincere effort to be a good person – ultimately heads towards the abyss in a society that offers him no support in life. Woyzeck becomes a victim of dull, patriarchal patterns. UMS’nJIP (Ulrike Mayer-Spohn and Javier Hagen) are among the most renowned and active ensembles for contemporary new music, with over 300 commissioned works and 1600 concerts in 40 countries, as well as 35 international awards. Their musical theater – especially mobile formats – has always been stylistically defining for them. They have realized more than 20 scenic works and presented them at prominent Swiss venues (Gessnerallee, Rütli-Blick, and Walcheturm Zurich, Gare du Nord and Theater Roxy Basel, PROGR Bern, Oggi Musica Lugano, Archipel Genève, Forum Wallis) as well as at renowned festivals and stages in Mexico, Argentina, the USA, Russia, China, Japan, Australia, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Spain, Italy, France, and the Baltic States.
