Her dreams are still coming true today. She began writing in the 1980s when she met Milena Hubschmannová. At that time, the future writer could not even imagine that she would write a short story, let alone more than one. Today, Ilona Ferková is a member of the Romani writers' club Paramisara and the Romani women's group Manushe, has published independent books, and written countless short stories. Perhaps because he knew from childhood how cruel the world can be. During World War II, he lost a large part of his family. Nevertheless, from a poor Romani boy, he became a Romani scholar, activist, musician, actor, and one of the important figures in the post-revolutionary debate about minorities and democracy. Documentary creation does not only arise in the environment of film schools, television, and production companies. In minority topics, the non-profit sector also becomes an important producer and initiator, allowing stories to emerge directly from the communities and their experiences. The portraits of Romani personalities Ilona Ferková and Ladislav Goral, produced by the organization Slovo 21, raise the question of what this path brings to the storytelling itself and who gets the opportunity to tell their story.
