Description

A Whole World in Music Nicknames of musical works often persist stubbornly. In an early version, Gustav Mahler once named his 1st Symphony Titan after the novel of the same name by the romantic poet Jean Paul. He later withdrew this name. The literary inspirations in his First Symphony are too diverse, as are the folk musical quotes and inspirations even from the visual arts. As he later formulated in another context, Mahler intended with his symphonic debut to depict a "whole world." A truly titanic ambition. Daedalus and Icarus also sought to transcend human limits, flying towards the sun with their wax wings. Geoffrey Gordon's new clarinet concerto Icarus follows this mythical ascent – and fall. In Salt, his "Bonus Track," Gordon also depicts the much less known warning of Daedalus to his son not to get too close to the salty waves.
