Why do you think The Köln Concert is so successful? This piece has something special. One cannot really pinpoint the reason for its success. Many people who love The Köln Concert do not particularly like Jarrett, and others who enjoy Jarrett's music do not like The Köln Concert. It is both very old and new, very classical yet jazzy, popular and avant-garde at the same time. There is a breath in it that undeniably leaves a mark. I know no other music in which someone is so physically involved. In both his playing and interpretation, one notes the use of the pedal and guttural sounds. Listening to the recording, I feel his body. For me, this music comes directly from the southern states of America with a strong connotation of Dixieland, swing, and gospel. I love that we wonder where something comes from and that this thing comes into the world unexpectedly. (…)
