Description

Antonio Vivaldi was ordained a priest in 1703 and subsequently became a chaplain at the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà in his hometown of Venice. Shortly thereafter, he began teaching violin and later assumed overall musical direction at the “Ospedale della Pietà”—an orphanage for girls on the Grand Canal that was affiliated with the church. Under his leadership, the Ospedale soon gained a legendary reputation: Vivaldi formed a world-class ensemble consisting of a choir and orchestra, drawing music lovers even from abroad—even though the girls and women had to perform behind a screen. While his violin concertos from his time at the Ospedale are particularly well-known, Vivaldi also composed sacred music for the girls at the orphanage. The La Cetra Baroque Orchestra, together with the Basel Girls’ Choir under the direction of Andrea Marcon, will perform a selection of these works at St. Martin’s Church. For example, the Credo in E minor, RV 591—Vivaldi’s only purely choral work in the sacred music genre that consists of multiple movements. The emotional Kyrie, RV 587, written for double choir, will also be performed. With a choir consisting primarily of girls’ voices and a few women’s voices, Vivaldi’s works for the Ospedale will once again be performed here virtually as they were originally—and will thus be recorded on CD for Naïve’s famous Vivaldi Edition.
