Description

The Isalo Massif is located in the south of Madagascar, 200 km from the coast. It is a mountain range with spectacular reliefs, which is not very suitable for human settlement. The site of Teniky extends over a rock circle with a diameter of 400 m. At the foot of the rocks, huge terraces, buildings made of hewn stone blocks, and cave dwellings with colonnades have been constructed. This architectural complex is unique in Madagascar and throughout Africa. Since 2021, the archaeological investigation of this complex has been resumed by a team of Swiss and Malagasy researchers. The main phase of settlement is dated to the 11th century AD, based on 14C dating and the archaeological finds, which consist of ceramics imported from China and the Persian Gulf. The new archaeological data expands the knowledge about the settlement of Madagascar.
