Teatime: Provenance Research at the Museum Langmatt

For almost three years, from 2022 to 2024, the Museum Langmatt, together with recognized experts, once again addressed the complex questions of provenance and possible claims to ownership of the paintings. Marc Munter, scientific staff member responsible for the museum's collection, talks about dealing with this delicate topic, the research approaches, and their results. In-depth examinations of the backs of the paintings and numerous archival documents allowed conclusions about the former owners and the dealers who sold some paintings to the Browns during the Nazi regime in the 1930s. Could the works by Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, or Pierre-Auguste Renoir possibly be paintings that Jewish collectors had to sell to finance their escape? The research supported by the Federal Office of Culture ultimately produced extensive reports, which are also presented at the “Teatime.” British tea and pastries will be served to the audience during the event.
