The nose from the father, the humor from the mother, the name from the grandfather, the traditions from the ancestors: We all inherit. What is laid in our cradle shapes the course of our lives. An inheritance can be a blessing and a curse, a privilege and a burden – whether it is money, genes, or beliefs. The exhibition “Help, I'm inheriting!”, developed by the Bern Generations House and adapted for Baden, invites you to look at the familiar in a new way and to reflect on what we take over and pass on. It's high time to talk about it: What does inheritance do to us? And even more importantly: What do we do with our inheritance? Your discovery journey through the world of inheritance
The exhibition already begins before the museum door. The characteristic inheritance stones mark the way into the museum as floor markings and invite reflection on what each person carries with them. In the exhibition room, they become the starting point for a personal search for traces: Visitors receive a vest with terms they cannot choose – like their own inheritance. However, they have the opportunity to adjust their vest and get rid of unwanted inheritance terms. There are over 250 quotes, facts, and anecdotes to discover, offering surprising perspectives on the topic of inheritance. On the following tour, visitors meet people who have inherited very different things: a wine business in the eleventh generation, debts, a faith, an artistic estate, or a trauma. The film portraits were created by documentary filmmaker Simon Baumann, whose film “We inherit”* is also part of the event program in Baden. The exhibition raises questions that concern many people: What do I inherit from whom? How do genes, family stories, and societal expectations shape me? And what responsibility do we bear towards future generations? An audio station accompanies this search for traces. As a closing moment, the exhibition invites visitors on a personal journey of thought. Lying on large cushions, visitors look at a screen above their heads and follow a calm narration about origin and transmission. This creates the image of a life as a book, whose story does not begin with one's own birth but generations before. Page by page, the installation leads back to parents, grandparents, and other ancestors and encourages reflection on one's own inheritance and life story. Afterwards, the vest received at the beginning is passed on. Whether with personal additions or passed on unchanged – it carries the decisions of its predecessors and accompanies the next visitors on their way through the exhibition.
