In «THE HERD/LESS» by South African choreographer Mamela Nyamza, rituals, repetition, and collective movement patterns generate power. The audience experiences vividly how cultural and social forces shape people and how fragile the balance between community and self-determination often is. Dampfzentrale: Mamela Nyamza is currently receiving many awards for her oeuvre, which weaves traumatic themes such as rape, the Soweto riots, and other racist and gender-based violence experiences. Delicately yet with great force, gracefully and aesthetically dreamlike, her works unfold on stage. «THE HERD/LESS» shows how community can support and simultaneously consume people.
