Description
Saxophonist and clarinetist Ned Rothenberg, pianist Sylvie Courvoisier, and drummer Nasheet Waits – three of the best improvisers in New York over the last three decades – have come together as Short Cuts. The collectively led trio is shaped by the progressive jazz tradition from Ornette to Zorn (not to mention modernist chamber music and intercultural approaches). In Short Cuts, abstraction is tempered by groundedness – very much in the spirit of the venerable New York tradition. Experimental textures meet rhythmic depth, and harmonic sophistication fosters freely flowing lyricism – this fully improvised music grooves and sings without resorting to clichés. "It feels so natural to improvise with Ned and Nasheet," says Courvoisier. "They are such great musicians and both love grooves, even in a freely improvised setting. The combination of wind instruments, piano, and drums also makes for a relatively unusual trio. But without a bassist, Ned and I have more space to play in the lower register, just as Nasheet has more freedom with his bass drum. And these guys love to take risks, just like I do."
