THE SPACE BETWEEN – CASPER FAASSEN

The Space Between combines works from Casper Faassen's much-acclaimed Landscape and Movement series. The exhibition creates a subtle dialogue between these two groups of works and explores presence, absence, and the spaces in between that connect them. The selection of landscapes, botanical studies, and new works from his ongoing series Movement reveals the connections that run through Faassen's artistic practice and visual language. They are influenced by the Japanese concept Ma — the understanding that empty space is never truly empty but carries as much meaning as the forms surrounding it. Landscapes, including those created in the Swiss Alps, engage in dialogue with new movement studies, realized in collaboration with Ayaha Tsunaki, the principal soloist of the Zurich Ballet. A central source of inspiration for Faassen is Shorin-zu byobu (Pine Forest), a folding screen by the Japanese painter Tohaku Hasegawa from the late 16th century. The work depicts pines painted in ink on paper, emerging from and disappearing into fog. Similarly, Faassen's landscapes dissolve into veils of mist, while the dancer, dressed in a black kimono, recalls the silhouetted pines in Hasegawa's composition. The title of the exhibition refers to the multiple dimensions of these spaces in between that characterize Faassen's work: the distance between artist and motif, the threshold between movement and stillness, and the layered surfaces from which his images emerge. By combining photography and painting, he develops each work in translucent layers, often finished with his characteristic craquelé technique.
