Peace! Sacred music from the Baltic Yuval Weinberg, conductor Works by Pēteris Vasks, Arvo Pärt, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Maja Einfelde and Uģis Prauliņš among others. Baltic choral music is characterized by a special tone: calm, clear – and often of astonishing intensity. Composers like Arvo Pärt, Peteris Vasks, or Maja Einfelde have developed a sound language that combines spiritual depth with contemporary expression. In their works, 'peace' is audible as a state.
Probably no ensemble is as predestined for these works as the SWR Vocal Ensemble. The choir is internationally regarded as a reference for new and demanding vocal music as well as for stylistic flexibility. Artistic director since 2020 is Yuval Weinberg, who previously was chief conductor of the Oslo Chamber Choir NOVA and from 2019 to 2023 artistic director of EuroChoir. The complete recording of all choral works by György Ligeti, which he presented in 2022 with the SWR Vocal Ensemble, was awarded, among others, the Diapason D’Or annual prize and the German Record Critics' Award.
