Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Overture to La clemenza di Tito KV 621 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Clarinet Concerto A Major KV 622 Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral) F Major op.68 Three highlights of Viennese Classicism shape this evening: The festive opening is provided by Mozart's overture to the opera La clemenza di Tito. Composed in 1791 for the coronation of Emperor Leopold II as King of Bohemia, the work immediately unfolds the dramatic tension and majestic energy that transports the audience directly into the emotional world of opera seria. Following is a milestone in music history: Mozart's famous clarinet concerto in A major. Also composed in his year of death, it fascinates with warm timbres, heartfelt cantability, and virtuosic passages. Martin Fröst, widely celebrated as a magician on his instrument, interprets this work of celestial beauty, which especially in its famous Adagio touches the soul directly. After the break, Beethoven's 6th Symphony, the Pastoral, takes us out into the green: The work, premiered in 1808, is a sonorous declaration of love to nature. In five movements, impressions of the peaceful awakening of nature, idyllic scenes by the stream, a dramatic thunderstorm, and the grateful shepherd's song afterward are created. Beethoven himself said that the work has "more expression of feeling than painting." He is celebrated worldwide as a visionary: Martin Fröst is more than a soloist – he is a boundary-crosser, redefining the classical stage through dance and direction.
