Sebastian Studnitzky, Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra BENEFIT FOR UKRAINE "Odesa is an incredibly beautiful city, the sun was shining, people constantly forgot that there was a war. And in the evenings, the sirens went off." In summer 2023, just a few weeks after Russia began its terror war against Ukraine, Sebastian Studnitzky traveled to the Black Sea to the city where Europe's history converges.
Odesa is a melting pot of cultures, under attack from Putin's Russia. Rocket strikes, drone attacks, murdered civilians. And a lot of destroyed culture, very much so. Putin wants to turn the city's diversity into ashes, its Mediterranean nonchalance, its laissez-faire. In Odesa, a culture that is Ukrainian and European is being bombed out. Sebastian Studnitzky counts among Europe's great musicians, he is a composer and jazz trumpeter, curator and pianist, well-rounded and decorated with the most beautiful awards in both jazz and classical music. If he performed solo, that would be a great moment in itself. He comes with the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra, the chamber orchestra of the Odesa Philharmonic, they are coming to us for the third time. This year on "DAY OF DIGNITY AND FREEDOM": November 21 commemorates the two civil revolutions - the Orange Revolution 2004 and the Revolution of Dignity 2013/14 on Maidan - with which Ukrainians broke free from the Russian Empire and found their way to Europe, their homeward path. MEMENTO ODESA is an homage: to the city, its inhabitants, and its culture, to their will to survive and their courage, their imagination and their defiance - an homage to all who resist Putin with all they have. Odesa stands for all cities in Ukraine. The collaboration between Studnitzky and the Odesa orchestra began before the war started, but after Putin's invasion of Ukraine, this collaboration changed. It had to evolve since missile alarms now accompany their music like a metronome. The images of the murders Putin commits overlay the sheet music. Can one still say what classical music is and what belongs to jazz under such conditions, what is from Studnitzky, what from Anastasiia Pokaz, the ensemble's singer, what from Volodymyr Dykyi, the conductor? What can be said: that it will become emotional, the threatening quietly creeps into the sound of the strings, transitions into warmth, like only grief can emit, and further into a melancholic depth, from which no gloom arises, but a confident defiance, warm, melodic, unyielding. "There is an orchestra on stage that then travels back to Odessa," says Sebastian Studnitzky, "and when we hear in the news that there were again drone attacks on Odessa, we recognize their faces and their music." An evening at the place of European promise, it lets hear how Europe sounds, defending itself against Putin.
