Description

For centuries, the Damenstift Säckingen owned lands along the Rhine. In Laufenburg, a marketplace was established, which the Habsburgs protected in the 12th century and expanded into a fortified town. The Rhine with its rapids was a challenge for navigation, which is why Laufenburg's men ensured safe passage. From 1232, the Counts of Habsburg-Laufenburg resided in the castle, but they lost influence in the 14th century. Laufenburg became a Vorarlberg forest town and center of lordship. Wars and fires shaped the city, which was divided by Napoleon in 1801. The economic boom began in 1908 with the construction of a hydroelectric power plant that made the rapids disappear.
