Ludwig van Beethoven Overture to Coriolan Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major op.73 Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 3 Eroica in E-flat major op.55 On March 26, 1827, Ludwig van Beethoven died in Vienna at the age of 56. In memory of his 200th death anniversary, the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie presents a pure Beethoven program with three central works from his heroic creative phase. The gripping Coriolan overture was composed in 1807 as a play overture and depicts the psychogram of a torn hero between pride and humanity. Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also characterized by heroic gesture, was composed in 1809 during the Napoleonic occupation of Vienna. The concert's monumental symphonic structure is forward-looking: without Beethoven's last piano concerto, (late) romantic piano concertos like those by Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Grieg, or Rachmaninoff would hardly be conceivable. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, op.55 Eroica – composed in 1803/04 and originally dedicated to Napoleon – significantly exceeds the dimensions of a typical symphony and ushers in a new era of music history. It is characterized by a heroic theme that connects all four movements into a monumental overall complex. With Elisabeth Leonskaja, one of the most important pianists of our time will be featured in this master concert. The artist born in Tiflis is revered worldwide as an antipode to stardom. Since moving to Vienna in 1978, she has performed with the most renowned orchestras and festivals from Paris to Tokyo. Leonskaja is a master of depth and clarity, awarded multiple times, including the International Classical Music Award for her lifetime achievement. Her recordings of the great classics demonstrate the highest interpretative maturity and are considered reference recordings. Marzena Diakun is the chief conductor of the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie. The internationally sought-after prizewinner of major competitions and former director of the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid is appreciated for her precise, energetic conducting.
