The South Korean singer, composer, and bandleader Song Yi Jeon is one of the most exciting voices in the international jazz scene. Her music combines modern jazz harmony with odd meters, influences from contemporary classical music, and Brazilian music. Despite these demanding ingredients, melodies of impressive naturalness emerge, touching immediately and resonating long after.
The audience of Musig im Pflegidach already knows Song Yi Jeon from her acclaimed duo performance with Brazilian guitarist Vinicius Gomes. At that time, she impressed with an exceptionally warm, crystal-clear voice, flawless intonation, and an expressiveness that captivated from the first to the last note. It was one of those evenings when you felt a very special artist was on stage. Song Yi Jeon's musical path led her from composition studies in Graz through jazz studies in Basel to the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she was the first Quincy Jones CJ&E Fellow. Later, she debuted at the legendary Blue Note New York and performed at venues such as the Jazz Gallery in New York and the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Collaborations with artists like Wolfgang Muthspiel, Julian Lage, Ambrose Akinmusire, Jeff Ballard, and Guillermo Klein underline her international appeal.
She recently gained special attention as a participant in the prestigious Rolex Mentor & Protégé Arts Initiative, accompanied by five-time Grammy winner Dianne Reeves. Her recordings are released on labels including Dave Douglas's Greenleaf Music and have been highly praised by the international press. At the heart of this trio, however, is not the impressive resume but the distinctive musical language. Song Yi Jeon's warm, expressive voice tells stories without showmanship. The sensitive interplay with piano and drums creates an atmosphere full of openness, tension, and mutual trust – music that seeks the moment and lets the audience participate directly. The trio is complemented by two outstanding musicians from the international jazz scene: Italian pianist Lorenzo Vitolo, whose playing is characterized by great harmonic sensitivity, rhythmic clarity, and a fine balance between lyrical restraint and powerful energy. On drums is Brazilian drummer Paulo Almeida, whose nuanced, colorful playing forms the rhythmic foundation of the trio. His musical language combines South American grooves with modern jazz aesthetics, giving the music an organic, breathing movement.
