Description
Kerstin Kubalek, artist, and Christoph Laib, photographer, embarked on a joint project tracing witnesses of the Second World War, which uniquely shaped the surroundings of Kreuzlingen. For the work group "Borderland," they photographed the bunker installations of the fortress belt during two winters from 2018 to 2020. Around 40 photographs were printed on Hahnemühle paper and mounted on MDF boards. Then coated with layers of wax, the bunker installations appear detached from the world. Working with wax is typical for Kerstin Kubalek's images, serving here as a metaphor for the increasingly forgotten relics of Thurgau's history. The photographs offer a very personal view of the bunkers as sculptures in the landscape. In the exhibition, they are also related to contemporary voices and memories, making the situation very vivid and real.
