**Hero: Why was it just me who was chosen?** **Author: Why not? The play has to have some hero. It has to be about something.** An evening of theater with unpublished and hardly known texts by Mani Matter recalls the Bernese chansonnier born 90 years ago and who died far too early. A collage of theater scenes, chansons, and texts leads into his playful world of thoughts – clever, philosophical, and with mischievous wit. Published texts and premieres testify to the fantasies and wordplays of the poet Mani Matter, who, according to his time, also devoted himself to the absurd, dialectical, and existential. His themes revolve around writing itself, timeless social games are designed and played through, it is always a conscious entry into the art world of theater – to serve it, only to leave it again. In the play, Mani Matter's viewpoints are represented by various characters recurring in his texts and songs: the author, the citizen, the hero, and the spirit. The evening moves delightfully between philosophy and nonsense, between drama and situational comedy, repeatedly revealing the author's mischievousness. **Who is Who**
Mani Matter (born 1936, died 1972) is one of the best-known singer-songwriters in Switzerland. With his Bernese German chansons, he shaped the local small arts scene and is still known for his fine, philosophical wit. His songs belong to the canon of Swiss music and continue to inspire artists to numerous reinterpretations. Besides his musical work, he studied law, held a teaching position at the University of Bern in public and administrative law, and worked, among other things, as a legal consultant for the city of Bern. Meret Matter studied acting at the Conservatory for Music and Theater Bern and founded Club 111 in 1989 with Grazia Pergoletti and Ruth Schwegler. She works as a director, author, and singer and realizes theater plays, musical theater, and interdisciplinary projects at venues and festivals at home and abroad. Her works include productions for Schauspielhaus Zürich, Luzerner Theater, and Theater Chur; recent works include “Jeeps,” “Helvetia bockt!,” “DieWERsieTÄT,” and “Föhnrausch.” Meret Matter is the daughter of Joy and Mani Matter.
