Skylar Tang undoubtedly belongs to the second category. At just twenty years old, the trumpeter and composer from the San Francisco Bay Area is already one of the most fascinating young voices in American jazz. Her extraordinary talent led her to two of the most prestigious educational institutions in the world – Columbia University and the legendary Juilliard School in New York. At the same time, she is developing rapidly into an independent artist whose music goes far beyond virtuosic trumpet playing. Tang has already shared the stage with personalities like Joshua Redman, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Sean Jones, and Rufus Reid, was part of Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra Jazz, and can be heard on Joshua Redman’s current Blue Note album Words Fall Short. Concert appearances have taken her to Carnegie Hall, the Monterey Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ, the Kennedy Center, as well as tours through Europe, South Africa, and Japan.
