In the salons of 19th-century Berlin, she caused a scandal by daring to appear without a hat at social events. Her Faust Overture is full of dramatic power. Almost like a gender swap, Beethoven's luminous Fourth Symphony is described charmingly by Robert Schumann as a "Greek slender maiden between two Nordic giants." In between is Arnold Schönberg's Chamber Symphony op. 9b. The world premiere in 1907 caused a major scandal with hissing and physical altercations – today, the work is regarded as a visionary milestone that boldly transcended the boundaries of tonality.
