Siri Hustvedt is one of the great contemporary writers and feminist intellectuals – yet she is much too little known in the German-speaking world. The portrait by filmmaker Sabine Lidl is outstanding cinematically and, with its charming animations based on drawings by the author, a 'stroke of luck for the cinema,' as one critic put it. The documentary also received numerous awards. Siri Hustvedt was born in 1955 in rural Minnesota in a liberal family. She moved to New York in 1978, 'to find the hero of my first novel. I didn't find the person. But that's life. I didn't know back then that I had brought my heroine into the city.' The film brings viewers closer to a literary figure in a moving way, who created world literature with works like 'The Invisible Woman' or 'What I Loved.' It is impressive how clever, unpretentious, and approachable Siri Hustvedt is and how openly she shares her life and thoughts with us. Deeply touching are the scenes of intimate connection between her and her late partner, the writer Paul Auster, who passed away in 2024.
