Sex work is legally recognized in Switzerland – yet it remains heavily stigmatized in society. Many sex workers experience exclusion, prejudice, and discrimination in everyday life. At the same time, various political and social groups call for a ban on buying sex, which sex workers and specialist agencies see as an additional risk and further displacement into insecure working conditions. But what concrete effects do stigmatization and such political efforts have on the lives of sex workers, their safety, and their social participation? How do deeply rooted societal notions shape sex work? And what ways are there to reduce prejudice and break the stigmatization of sex work in the long term? We discuss this with the sex worker and writer of “Why they hate us, hostility towards sex work” Ruby Rebelde, the sex worker Jana Oneira, and Dr. iur.
