Late blossoms bloom incredibly beautifully – this poetic image is especially true for the music of the late Renaissance in England. Behind the great, inexplicably painful beauty, mortality already shines through; dreams are illusions, longing is unfulfilled longing, love is unhappy love, happiness is past happiness, and sleep is eternal sleep. This immersion in transience had a name in England of the late 16th and early 17th centuries: Melancholy. To stylize melancholy as an aesthetic pleasure – no other composer of the time mastered this art better than John Dowland (c. 1563–1626). His 1597 published First Booke of Songes or Ayres made the artful song, accompanied by lute or viola da gamba consort, a new trend and triggered a real hype.
