Self and World. Works from the Collection

Description

What kind of artworks are in the collection of the Nidwaldner Museum? And how can they be characterized? A look into the depot shows that they can only be described to a limited extent by the widespread term "Inner Swiss inwardness." Because in addition to introspective themes and the examination of the self, Nidwaldner artists have always dealt with world events and international art movements. This is reflected in the works and biographies of many of the presented artists.

The interplay between self and world forms the red thread of the new permanent exhibition. The collection's focal points are shown: the studio, mythological and biblical themes, nature and landscape depictions, as well as the engagement with body, death, and transcendence. The dialogue between past and present spans from the 17th to the 21st century. Old and new meet and create surprising constellations.

In addition to artworks, individual artifacts and archival materials are presented. Selected works from the permanent loan of the Frey-Näpflin Foundation are also included. They thematize the relationship between self and world from the perspective of a collector couple who, in addition to Central Swiss and Swiss art, collected significant works by Flemish, Italian, and French masters. The exploration of self and world is thus also reflected in the exhibition's tension-filled juxtaposition of local and European art.

The art-historical permanent exhibition offers the opportunity to rediscover the house and the collection of the Nidwaldner Museum.
