Music is omnipresent in our lives today. Whether shopping, at work, or on the go: music is constantly available. But listening to music was not always so commonplace.

The exhibition No Time To Lose tells the story of dance music in the canton of Nidwalden from 1900 to the present. The focus is on those places where people came together to listen to music, dance, and have fun: taverns, dance halls, discos, festivals.

In the Salzmagazin, folk music from the turn of the century comes alive again, jazz exudes a sophisticated flair in dance halls, and discos like Happy Day or Harissen testify to a time when Nidwalden was the epicenter of nightlife in Central Switzerland.

It is about continuities and changes that shaped musical enjoyment in the 20th century – from conflicts with the law to changing moral views and technical innovations. The exhibition shows how music and society influence each other.

Finally, it is also about music from the canton. From folk music greats to pop stars "made in Nidwalden," the exhibition highlights the backstories of genuine hits, brings unheard music pieces to the ears, and invites visitors to dance in a reconstructed disco styled after the 70s and 80s.
