From poetic to dark The waltz stands for a perfect world. At least on the surface, because when Maurice Ravel says «everything waltz!» the dance soon turns towards the abyss and even beyond. A whole world, that of the Habsburg Empire, of old Europe, is commemorated with La Valse – perhaps with a longing glance back. Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto is music of fine nuances, full of poetry. A concert that romantically speaks of longing. Ideal for the Polish-Canadian exceptional pianist Jan Lisiecki. Schumann's concerto is embedded in two works of the recent modern era: Kaija Saariaho's gaze into the starry sky Ciel d’hiver and into the enchanted soundscape of George Crumb's A Haunted Landscape. A commissioned composition by Polish composer Anna Sowa will premiere. It is the first piece of the new series ‹Bonus Tracks› initiated by the Basel Symphony Orchestra. The concert will be recorded by SRF 2 Kultur.
