Description

In the hilly landscape of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, the bells of the Silvesterchläuse ring out. They wear their elaborately decorated hats that tell stories of life in the province. But a Schuppel – a group of Chläusen – tells a different story. One that is not expected here, but belongs just as much as the stories of logging and skiing. It is the story of a lesbian love that flares up turbulently and ultimately ends in a 'gruesome' demise. Using this failing relationship, 'Schällewiiber' explores the conflicts and contradictions of queer life plans between city and countryside. How can the evil spirits be driven away, and what is behind the 'gfürchige' face?
Between patriarchal traditional lines and queer tragedy, the performance weaves a coming-of-age story with traditional rites. An aesthetic friction arises that makes the invisible visible and opens space for coming together. A production by Pop-Up Mountain Company.
