Description

“A large ensemble captures many things, a small one allows many things,” say the critics. The Stuttgart trombonist Samuel Restle uses exactly this tension and dares with his octet what few dare: he approaches the very big sound with a small ensemble. The result is a “pocket big band,” in which five wind players combine the rich sound fullness of an orchestra with the flexibility and elasticity of a jazz combo. There is enough room for each individual's sound. Through friendly relationships within the band and authentic interplay, a homogeneous whole emerges: a sonorous, warm section sound that, despite its precise structure, gives each musician enough space for personal expression – sometimes precisely arranged, sometimes wildly improvised.
