This concert honors Romania's 20-year membership in the European Union. In the spirit of cultural connectedness, Béla Bartók's Romanian Dances open the evening. In this colorful cycle, the composer captures the unfiltered soul of Eastern Europe. Based on authentic melodies, the work ranges from melancholic depth to fiery exuberance. Niccolò Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major is considered a pinnacle of violin literature. The legendary devil's violinist created an explosive fireworks display of breathtaking double stops and shimmering harmonics, combined with the bel canto sweetness of an Italian opera aria. This demands not only flawless technique at high speed from the soloist but also the ability to maintain a grand, singing tone amidst these virtuosic challenges. The award-winning violinist Elli Choi already has an impressive international career. She performs worldwide in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, and the Tonhalle Zurich. After winning the Monaco World Music Masters in 2016, she has received numerous top awards, most recently the 3rd prize at the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition. The concert concludes with Mendelssohn Bartholdy's 4th Symphony, the Italian - a work full of light-filled cheerfulness. From the jubilant departure of the first movement to the rapturous Saltarello finale, Mendelssohn captures the blue Italy in perfect symphonic form. The concert is conducted by Gabriel Bebeșelea, chief conductor of the George Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest and Conductor in Residence in Timișoara. Bebeșelea, trained by legends such as Bernard Haitink and Kurt Masur, regularly guest conducts top orchestras like the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. The Romanian Symphony Orchestra (founded in 2025) sees itself as the national team of the best Romanian instrumentalists playing in the international diaspora. As a global cultural ambassador for Romania, the ensemble combines classical brilliance with the language of folk music.
