Description
A recognized 20th-century writer, Romain Gary played a role during World War II that remains unknown. He wanted to fight, thus fulfilling his mother's dream of integration, who had instilled in the young Russian immigrant that he was the love of France. He joined London at General de Gaulle's call in 1940 and joined the Free French Air Forces. This earned him injuries and decorations. Named "Companion of the Liberation," he would maintain a total admiration and unwavering attachment to General de Gaulle throughout his life: "I am an unconditional Gaullist, that is to say a man who has formed a certain idea of General de Gaulle, as General de Gaulle has formed a certain idea of France."
