His new book «Glory and Misery of Conservatives» (2026) is at the forefront. Conservatives and Christian Democrats often proved to be reformers, according to de Weck. They promoted European unity and social market economy. But can conservatism renew itself? Today, center-right parties seem torn between an alliance with reactionary forces and a clear commitment to an open society. In view of the globally rising authoritarian forces, de Weck advocates for a self-assurance of conservatives: their main opponent is now on the far right, not on the left. Instead of exhausting themselves in cultural battles against Social Democrats, Greens, and «Good People», it is necessary to resist destabilization by Trump supporters and reactionaries, embody stability in disruptive times, and work towards more European sovereignty – against the authoritarian powers China, Russia, and the USA. Sociologist Ueli Mäder conducts the conversations, and Peter Schmid provides musical accompaniment.
