What if a river could speak? What if it spoke of freedom, fear, anger and the longing for a different life? “Probably: do away with men,” suggests one of the women* featured in RIVER DREAMS. Against the backdrop of Kazakhstan’s gender-conservative society, they speak of their dreams, their suffering and their everyday lives in a society marked by patriarchal violence and silence. The Aksay River becomes a mirror of an entire country: it rises in the mountains, crosses the steppe and never reaches the sea. The film depicts a radical, tender awakening of women* whose suppressed anger unleashes itself like a tidal wave.
