Marina Mellos's third and final Carte Blanche evening is entirely dedicated to the harp. Rhodri Davies and Marina Mello both perform solo harp pieces — and yet in two very different ways. Although both share a passion for the instrument and a similar approach, they differ through their personal and distinctive ways of exploring the harp — from choosing the type of harp to using extended playing techniques and electronics. Rhodri Davies is a Welsh harpist, improviser, composer, and multidisciplinary artist. Whether classical harp, Bray harp, horsehair harp, or electric harp, installations with wind, water, ice, or fire, or experimenting with preparations and detuning — the possibilities for exploring the concept of 'harp' seem almost endless. It is no coincidence that Davies is one of the most prominent members of the reductionist London school of improvised music.
