Sol Gabetta Recital

Cello heart, what more do you want! When Sol Gabetta comes to the Stadthaus and her program includes the sonatas by Edvard Grieg and Sergei Rachmaninoff, which also contain two of the most beautiful romantic cello works, a musical highlight is guaranteed. As a Liszt and Ravel expert, Bertrand Chamayou has the nimble fingers and the delicate color palette required by the piano part in Rachmaninoff and Grieg. It is well known that Rachmaninoff was a pianist of the century, but Grieg was also an excellent pianist who studied at the leading conservatory in Leipzig in the tradition of Schumann and Mendelssohn. This can also be heard in Grieg's music, which is not only based on Norwegian folk tunes and inventive harmonies but also on a craftsmanship appreciated by Brahms as much as by Tchaikovsky. These two very different spirits would probably have agreed on Rachmaninoff's cello sonata as well, as it also combines feeling and spirit, tradition and innovation. None of the works would have come into being without personal relationships: Grieg dedicated his sonata to his brother, who once wanted to become a cellist, Rachmaninoff dedicated his work to a cellist friend who was also his best man – and Benjamin Britten wrote all his cello compositions for Mstislav Rostropovich. Britten also recorded the piece with him, and friendship can be heard there: in the great "Elegy" of the slow movement as well as in the playful dialogues of the fast movements, the first of which is aptly titled "Dialogo." What a blessing that Gabetta and Chamayou are such intimately trusted chamber music partners and cultivate the high art of musical communication like few others. When piano and cello then play the motifs back and forth, humor flashes through all the feeling in Grieg, and Britten shows himself in liberated joy of life like rarely otherwise.
