Truly born only two or three decades ago, the archaeology of colonial slavery provides essential elements to study, materialize, and anchor these terrifying episodes of modern and contemporary history in places and memories. It is an archaeology of the discreet, modest, fleeting, imperceptible, seeking traces that are not very spectacular, left in the earth by enslaved communities, confined within a slave-holding universe. The architectural remains left by the dominant have been overemphasized at the expense of the subtle and often difficult-to-detect remains of the villages of the enslaved, the 'nègre houses' streets, burial sites, not to mention the camps of fugitive maroons, inherently of absolute discretion. Archaeology gradually reveals these buried memories.
