Anyone expecting a classic big band sound here will be surprised: Rebecca Trescher rethinks music – transparent, poetic, and boundless. For Musig im Pflegidach, Rebecca Trescher is by no means a stranger. She is visiting Muri for the third time – a nice sign of the long-standing connection between the extraordinary clarinetist and our concert cycle. Her previous performances belong to those concerts that have remained sustainably in the audience's memory. Several professional live videos were also created as part of these concerts, which Rebecca Trescher still uses today for applications, radio and festival presentations, as well as her international work. We are particularly pleased that productions from Muri have thus found their way onto the big stages and into the international jazz scene. The German clarinetist, bass clarinetist, composer, and bandleader has been one of the most exciting personalities in European jazz for years. With her tentet, she has created an ensemble that is unique in this form. Saxophones and clarinets meet trumpet and flugelhorn, joined by vibraphone, concert harp, cello, piano, double bass, and drums. This extraordinary instrumentation opens sound spaces that go far beyond what is commonly associated with jazz. Rebecca Trescher's music moves with great ease between improvised music, contemporary classical, and symphonic soundscapes. Compositions of great emotional depth arise, which still leave enough room for improvisation and spontaneous musical encounters. Each voice has its own personality – and yet everything merges into one great common sound. That Rebecca Trescher is one of the most important composers of her generation was impressively shown by her “Paris Cycle – The Spirit of the Streets,” which she composed after a several-month stay as Artist in Residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. For this work, she received the German Jazz Award in 2022 as Composition of the Year – an award that impressively confirms her extraordinary compositional signature. With her current program Changing Perspectives, Rebecca Trescher focuses on the creative potential of her ten fellow musicians. She asked each ensemble member for a musical idea – be it a short melody, a motif, or a sketch. From these fragments, large-scale compositions emerged in which the personality of each individual remains audible and at the same time a fascinating overall sound arises. The tentet thus becomes an instrument itself – a breathing organism in which individuality and community merge impressively. The continuity of this ensemble is also remarkable. Since its founding, Rebecca Trescher has worked with an almost unchanged lineup. This mutual trust is palpable in every concert. Every musician knows when to lead, when to accompany, and when ten individualists merge into a single musical voice. The live sound is also part of her artistic concept. Since its founding, the tentet has traveled with its own sound engineer, who is himself a musician and producer. His finely tuned live mix contributes significantly to the enormous sound diversity and transparency of this extraordinary music being fully realized in the concert hall. With the Rebecca Trescher Tentett, Musig im Pflegidach presents one of the most renowned large ensembles of European jazz. A concert full of colors, surprising sound combinations, and musical stories – sophisticated, touching, and at the same time immediately accessible.
