STAGE | READING Reading, Holger Finze-Michaelsen, Escape over the mountains during the Nazi era It is almost forgotten that there were refugees who, during the Nazi era, tried to escape from Montafon to Prättigau and thus to Switzerland. They were Jews, mainly from Vienna, resistance fighters from socialist and communist circles, Greek forced laborers, members of the German Wehrmacht on home leave, and young people from organizations like the Scouts that had recently been banned. It was the fear for their lives that drove them—some having traveled from far away—over the passes into Prättigau. Many lost their lives or were sent back by the Swiss border guard. Holger Finze-Michaelsen, who was previously a pastor in Prättigau, has compiled his research from the Bern Federal Archives, newspapers, and contact with descendants of the refugees into a book that has just been published: "Escape over the mountains to Prättigau. Stories of refugees and deserters 1938-1945." He presents the often dramatic escape routes of some of the 175 men and women who came over Schlappin, the St. Antönier, and Seewiser passes.
