Arnold Schönberg's Ode to Napoleon is a fiery protest against tyranny, composed in exile as a bitter satire on Napoleon. The radiant counterpoint is Beethoven's Triple Concerto – a summit meeting of three soloists in the formation of a piano trio, tossing ideas back and forth in a witty dialogue. In Elgar's Enigma Variations, musical portraits of his friends are hidden, but an invisible theme hovers above, which Elgar never revealed.
