Description

For inhabitants of Western Europe, Russia was long an unknown land. But from the early years of the 16th century, an increasing number of European travelers visited the land of the Tsars, and some of them produced descriptions of Russia, its government, and its people. Like all travel accounts, these texts provide us with information about the country concerned, but also – and perhaps especially – about the perspective on this country, in other words, how Westerners of the 16th-17th centuries perceived Russia.

Highlights

  • Exploration of European travelers' accounts in Russia
  • Focus on the 16th and 17th centuries
  • Analysis of Western perceptions of Russia
