Whanganui is the longest river in New Zealand. In 2017, it gained another distinction. The New Zealand Parliament granted it the status of a living entity with its own rights and responsibilities. Anyone who harms it, for example through pollution, must face serious penalties. The local Māori Iwi community, which views the river as one of its ancestors, has been advocating for this legislative change for over 170 years. This documentary also pays tribute to the sacred waterway. Indigenous guide Ned Tapa takes us on a five-day journey along the nearly 300-kilometer river. During this peaceful trip through picturesque landscapes, we learn about the local ecosystem and Māori culture, but we also delve into the traumatic colonial history. This ethnographic film by Czech director Petr Lom is a gentle call for us to treat the planet as we would our neighbor.
