FLECHA: ENSALADAS Mateo Flecha (1481-1553): Las Ensaladas La Guerra (War)
El Fuego (Fire)
La Justa (Knightly Tournament)
La Bomba (Pump) Program annotation Mateo Flecha the Elder (1481-1553), a Spanish Renaissance composer, is the author of a unique genre called "ensaladas" - musical "potpourris" that combine various languages, styles, and forms. These compositions, full of humor and dramatic scenes, present a colorful mosaic of Renaissance life and culture. Flecha's "ensaladas" are not only musical entertainment but also an important testimony to the rich tradition of Spanish polyphony and its ability to tell stories through metaphors. From a musicological perspective, the ensalada represents a highly specific and innovative phenomenon, compositionally based on the principle of quotlibet. It is characterized by marked stylistic, metric, and textural plurality. In his works, Mateo Flecha organically and with admirable sense of musical drama intertwines various languages and dialects (Castilian, Catalan, Latin, and the then-specific Afro-Hispanic sociolect), masterfully alternating sections of strict imitative polyphony with energetic declamation and citations of contemporary popular songs. The dramatic plots of the pieces - whether it is a battle tumult (La Guerra), a devastating fire (El Fuego), a sinking ship (La Bomba), or a knightly tournament (La Justa) - are not mere self-serving sound images but serve as elaborate theological allegories. They typically symbolize the eschatological struggle of good against evil and the redemption of humanity through the birth of Christ, which deeply anchors these compositions ideologically and liturgically in the Advent season. We recommend warm clothing. After the concert, we invite listeners, as we do every year, to mulled wine and small Advent refreshments at the castle's ticket office.
